If you wish to convert a small loft, it will need to be 2.4m at its highest point. This is measured from the apex of your roof to the top of the ceiling boards.
After the conversion, you will need a minimum of 2m final standing room to make it worthwhile.
Dormer windows are one of the best ways to create extra space in a small loft, while you will need to “think vertical”, having storage that goes upwards rather than outwards, or having a shower unit instead of a bath.
Terraced house loft conversion ideas
If you live in a modern, mid-terrace house, it is likely it will have a truss roof, which is a structural framework of timbers providing support for your roof.
This is not a problem to convert, as long as your roof is high enough.
If your conversion comprises roof windows and does not exceed a volume allowance of 40 cubic metres – the legal standard for terraced houses – you may not even require planning permission.

Dormer design ideas
A dormer loft conversion involves building a dormer – a vertical structural extension – on to an existing sloping roof.
This can transform your cramped attic into a usable room by creating extra floor space and head room, with the addition of dormer windows.
The different types of conversion include a flat roof dormer, the cheapest variation, offering the largest amount of space.
Other options include a shed dormer, which has a flat roof, sloping downwards at a shallower angle than the main roof and often found on houses which have a gable roof.
A third option is a gable-fronted dormer, comprising a gable wall extension built up to the current ridge line, plus a new roof section, built outwards towards the new gable end.
Stairs for loft conversion
Your choice of staircase is among the most important decisions, affecting the layout of your upper floor and the loft space itself.
Often, the best place to put a staircase to the loft is above the existing stairs. For example, if you start at the side of the bedroom door and build the stairs upwards along the wall, no extra space is taken away from the first floor living area.
