Princesshay Shopping Centre is expecting hundreds of visitors this evening, as Exeter officially welcomes the start of the festive season with the annual Christmas Lights Switch On Event. This year visitors will be treated to a spectacular new display featuring thousands of LED lights, lit canopies, hanging chandeliers, light projections, giant bauble displays, illuminated polar bears and of course, Christmas trees! Visitors will also get the opportunity to have their photo taken inside a giant Snow Globe, located at the lower end of Bedford Street, with 10% of proceeds going to Princesshay’s charity of the year Age UK.
The festivities kick-off at 4pm with live entertainment provided by Exeter University Jazz Orchestra, followed by performances from local drama groups and musical acts including ‘Sound of the Sirens’, a local girl-duo who recently performed on the new series of TFI Friday and have been a mainstay of the Tiverton Balloon & Music Festival (Sponsored by CPM) over the past few years. The lights are due to be switched on at 6.30pm by local celebrities Michael Caines MBE and Tony Rowe OBE, illuminating all the lights in and around the city centre.
Once celebrations have subsided, shoppers are expected to hit the town for the some late night shopping and Princesshay will be showcasing a wide variety of brands with some fantastic Christmas offers! Most of the shops will be trading until 9pm and this will continue every Thursday night until Christmas. There will also be street entertainment taking place in Gandy Street including a juggling Winter Fairy, Sparky the Robot and Musical Ruth, the madcap nun, to create a real festive atmosphere!!
Exeter Cathedral Green will once again host the hugely-popular German Christmas Market where you’ll find more than 50 traders serving up a whole host of traditional Christmas gifts including handmade crafts, decorations and lots of scrumptious food & drink. If you’ve had enough of shopping (lads!), you could always grab an authentic German beverage from one of the Bavarian bars lining the cathedral. The German Christmas Market won the National Association of British Market Authorities “Best Speciality Award 2014” so this is definitely NOT one to miss!
Whatever you’re planning this evening, make sure you don’t miss out on the Number 1 Christmas Event in the Southwest! See the full timetable of events here.
